How important is testing for Magnesium? What brand test kit do you use?

Salifert I test once week

I use salifert. And I test whenever at least once a month. But I use Tropic Marine salt that usually includes that’s if I do a water change that month.

What is everyone trying to keep there mag at and why?

I test every week just in case . I keep my mag between 1350-1400 . I test with Aquaforest TestPro

i test once a week and use salifert trying to keep my mag close to 1350 as possible, i noticed better growth around that range and i dose with Brightwell Aquatics Magnesion-P

Mag is pretty important actually. Without it you may find your corals are "soft", meaning when you frag them they don't split nicely they sort of turn to mush right where they were damaged. Long term low magnesium will also affect growth rate and shape.

What's the lowest you should allow?
I've been around 1200,,,, but just started dosing to achieve 1400

It can get low for short periods, although I would be curious what was eating up all the Mg. I've tested as low as 1000 at one time.

Remember, having Mg too high will cause your snails and some other inverts to get very lethargic and slow, which ultimately leads to death.
