I've been using rc with my new setup started about 3 months ago.

I tested a day old batch mixing in a 5 gallon bucket of RODI.
1.023
PH: 8.1
CAL: 590
Alk : 12
Mag: over 1500
77 F
all brand new Salifert Kits

This seems really high to me except the PH. Everything in my tank looks fine.
pretty close to the same params in my tank, except the ALK is lower around 8.9 and the ph is a little higher 8.2

Anyone have similar tests with RC?

I wish my salt was that high while mixing it, I would never need to dose again! That's just about where I keep all my levels at.

But sorry, never used rc, I only use esv.

Thanks for your reply>

I've been searching and i have found that some RC batches have been high. But i was wondering if anybody here has had problems using those batches.
I guess it shouldnt be, if your saying you stay about these levels with dosing.

I usaully never see anybody post parameters like Cal and Mag that high thought it was too high..

Are you sure it is not a testing error?

Just following the directions in the box. are there mistakes people usually make when using salifert? if there are let me know just to make sure im not doing the same thing.

Its basically the same method for ALK test and that seems like a normal range. using the same type method for cal and mag.

Guys what salt do you use? "that stuff sucks" isnt much help..

Partially why I stopped using it a long time ago, always left the mixing containers dirty even after heavily mixing it a solid 5 days with big powerheads before putting it in the display. Try ESV it's been great.

those number are standard for RC. there was a big post on Reef central were someone tested all the different brads of salt and posted the results. RC salt was one with the highest cal and mag.

its almost amazing that i have used rc for 6 months now with great results , they are among the first sea salts for aquariums on the market and they had great results then but suddenly the world is consumed by the designer salt companies and its like a pair of sneakers !!!! air max are the best sneakers hands down!! one week later release the new jordans and suddenly air max are old news and they hurt your feet lololol guys dont fall into the commercial pit cause they give you a free set of scoopers !! i know guys out here with 180 and 200 gallon tanks who use rc and have no complaints whatsoever so just try it out and dont go ballistic about the numbers , remember its just a hobby not rocket science ! lets not go crazy trying every brand out there either i think that will cause more problems than you care to deal with.

I totally understand where your coming from, i will probably ride it out least the rest of my 5 Gallon Bucket. it would be such a waste.
I wanted someone with those numbers to chime in to let me know how there tank was doing over a long period with the higher CAL and MAG #'s just to make sure it wasnt something harmful over the long haul.

remember i just started this tank with RC so im not stocked up with coral to use all this Calcium, I'm sure as time goes by i will add something that requires the demand. right now its just a few LPS and softess from my nano and they look better then ever.

thanks!

anytime man and hey i dont want this to come across as a bad thing, i admire all you guys who take the time to really breakdown your water specs and dose carefully i just personally have not seen the true magic of esv or any other salt and my tank has awesome coral growth and my clam couldnt be any more blue than it is now so just run out that bucket and see what the guys out here have to say about the different salts , i mean all the guys on mr have many tricks to this trade and if you want take weekly pics of your tank until you run out of salt and that may help you decide.

I totally get where you were going with this too, heck I probably would have kept using it but I always had to give the salt an extra day of mixing time in my water change container and I had to scrub off the white film it left behind other than that I could live with the numbers, but whatever makes maintenance easier I'm all for it.
