Hey Reefers! Let's talk Acanthophyllia!

Acanthophyllia, or sometimes referred to as Doughnut Corals, because of their round shape and bright colors, are some of the most well known and highly sought after corals in our hobby!

These "meat corals" are easily recognizable by their large fleshy bodies surrounding their central mouth, and the dazzling array of colors and patterns they come in! Similar to Scolys in terms of their layout and vibrant colors, Acanthophyllia are just usually MUCH bigger! It is not uncommon for them to be dinner plate sized or larger!

Their coloration and unique patterns are easily one of the most breathtaking features of Acanthophyllia! Over the years we've seen them in almost every color spectrum imaginable! With all new patterns and combinations popping up constantly! Holographic, Rainbow, Speckled, and so many more! They are most commonly viewed under actinic lighting in reef tanks. This allows for their amazing coloration to really shine to which they are absolutely mesmerizing! Check out some of the craziest Acanthophyllia that have ever surfaced HERE, in an awesome article on Reefbuilders!

In terms of care, Acanthophyllia are generally considered relativity easy to care for. Which might be surprising for such a high-end, Collector's Coral! Due to their large skeleton and fleshy bodies, they are actually quite hardy, and do extremely well in a home reef! This, paired with that one-of-a-kind coloration, makes for a prized tank centerpiece! When keeping Acanthophyllia, like all corals, it is always important to give them the proper care! We keep our doughnuts in moderate lighting and flow, making sure they are not getting too much or too little of each. Being so fleshy, Acanthophyllia are typically placed on the bottom of tanks, and generally in the sand bed. This gives their flesh support to fully open up and so tank currents don't pull the flesh upward. Watching them open up and spread out is always a treat!

Acanthophyllia are well known for being some of the most ferocious feeders on the reef! They are an absolute blast to feed! Opening to the point where they almost seem completely inside out, exposing their hidden tentacles and capturing food! We feed a variety of mysis, brine shrimp and meaty foods and they just can't seem to get enough of it! Using a pipette to place it straight onto their mouth! Check out an unbelievable feeding video HERE! Feeding them won't leave you disappointed!
