Hey Reefers! Let's talk Goniopora!
Goniopora used to be referred to as one of the trickiest coral to master. They did not do great long term in home aquariums, and would randomly be lost without reason or knowing why! Thankfully, due to the progression of our hobby throughout the years, and the overall increase in knowledge about these corals, they have become a reef staple that everyone can enjoy!
There are several different types of Goniopora that come from a variety of countries. Aussie and Indo are the bigger ones, but there are also Gonis that come from Fiji and Tonga! These well-known LPS (Large Polyp Stony) corals have become wildly popular due to their unreal coloration, and long, extended polyps that can be mesmerizing to watch in the flow! Goniopora come in all shapes, sizes, and colors! Making them a desired choice for fragging and Aquaculture! They come in almost every color you could imagine and every combination in between! Stunning shades of red and pink, to highlighter neons and yellow! Some even have unique patterns on their polyps such as stripes and sparkling glitter! With so much variety within just Goniopora coloration itself, these corals can become highly desired! Similar to Euphyllia and Zoanthids, Reefers have started to build "Goniopora Gardens"! When it comes to Goniopora care, they have become much more simple and similar to other LPS Corals! We keep our Goni in moderate lighting, although it has been known that you can keep them at several different lighting intensities, if you do so gradually! Flow can be tricky for Goniopora. Reefers should make sure their Goni is getting enough moderate and randomized flow to keep it happy and swaying with it's polyps out, but not too much! As it could cause damage to the polyps and flesh, introducing possible health issues! Providing not enough flow is also an issue, as polyps could sit stagnant and allow for detritus to collect!
When it comes to feeding and energy production, Goniopora are no different! Like most corals, they are photosynthetic, thanks to their symbiotic zooxanthella! They also benefit from spot feeding! We feed our Gonis a blend of very fine foods, a couple times a week. Phyto and zooplankton are good choices, due Goni's having very small mouths at the end of their polyps!
