Hey Reefers! Let's talk Favia & Favites!
Favia and Favites are one of the most popular and well-known LPS corals in our hobby! Their recognizable and distinct features make them easy to spot and differentiate from other corals! Most of these vibrant LPS corals originate from Australia, but some do come out of Indonesia every once and awhile! So what is the difference between them, as they can be hard to tell apart?
Favia Corals are often known for their extremely vibrant, large eye polyps, which come in a range of every color and combination imaginable! These corals usually have a more rounded, encrusting or slightly domed growth pattern structure compared to Favites. However, the main difference is the amount of skeletal walls! Each Favia eye is completely surrounded by a skeletal wall (except new growth), you can usually see a distinct separation between each individual eye.
Favites Corals, on the other hand, are often more flat in terms of growth, with a more compact encrusting! Favites corals can also display a wide range of vibrant colors, but most tend to be more generic or uniform in color combinations and pattern. In Favites you'll see the absence of thick skeletal walls separating each eye. With each polyp sharing a border with surrounding ones!
These corals are typically hardier comparatively to other LPS corals. They benefit from moderate light and flow, but can be slowly acclimated to fit a wide range of spectrums! Most Favia and Favites will filter feed with each polyp from the water column, but can be spot fed to accelerate growth and healing. Try fine foods such as Zoo- and Phytoplankton, as their eyes can range from large to small! Additionally, while these corals are not as aggressive as some other LPS corals, they can put out sweeper tentacles. So try and give them plenty of space in your reef!
Overall, Favia and Favites corals make great additions to a reef tank! Their wide diversity provide endless possibilities when considering a new piece. New Aquacultured strains are popping up all the time, making collecting new ones a challenge and thrill! We have dozens of different Favia and Favites varieties available on our website!
