Hey Reefers! Today's Topic: Keeping Water Parameters!
Keeping a reef tank doesn't have to be difficult! One of the best and easiest ways to maintain tank stability and promote coral health is by having steady and reliable water parameters!
The first step in keeping stable water parameters, is having great and reliable water to begin with! Here at Corals.com we have a multi-stage RO (Reverse Osmosis) system that strips our water down to zero ppm. Removing all impurities or contaminants. We then mix our pure water with Instant Oceans' Reef Crystals, which is our preferred reef salt that we have been using for years! It provides a solid base for our salt water when adding to our tanks when we preform our daily water changes!
Testing our water parameters is at the forefront of caring for our corals! The best way to do this, and maintain it long-term is creating a schedule and sticking to it! We test each one of our tank systems every single day here at Corals.com. It's actually the very first thing we do in the morning before starting our day! This helps us make adjustments if need be, and have a better understanding on how our corals are doing!
We exclusively use Hannah Instruments for testing our parameters. Over the years, we have had continued success with Hannah Checkers and couldn't live without them! In our opinion, they are the best and most accurate ways you could test a reef tank! When dosing these elements, again consistency is key! Here at the shop we have automatic dosing by Neptune Systems, which we have relied on for years!
The main parameters we test for daily are Alkalinity, Calcium, and Salinity. We consider them to be the 3 most important numbers to consistently test for in established systems. We record and log these parameters every day so we can look back and monitor them long term! Here's where we like to keep our tanks around from a numbers perspective!
Specific Gravity - 1.026
Calcium - 450ppm
Alkalinity - 8 to 9dKH
Temperature - 77 to 78 Degrees
The best way to have success with your tank is hands down rock solid parameters! It doesn't have to be difficult as long as you are consistent, and your corals with thank you for it!
Have a great weekend, Reefers!
