I am having alot of problems with a 75 gallon tank that i bought off a friend, he had a 20 gallon long sump which was deff designed backwards or wrong. i am looking to re design it can anyone help me with the proper way to re make my sump. as it is right now theirs a chamber for the protein skimmer and the sock to sit and then that flows over a baffle which doesnt really do anything other then seperate the chamber from the refugium which then flows to a bubble trap to my return pump. I am very new to sumps and i am lost on how i am properly suppose to have one

so why am i still getting so many bubbles, i have a mag 9.5 and i am going to downgrade to a mag 7 because my overflow is rated for only 600 gph, is this where all my bubbles could be from because alot of bubbles come out of my filter sock.

but heres my problem where the bubble trap was put their was sufficient of room to fit a skimmer and filter sock but that gave the bubbles no time to dissipate because the bubble trap was immediately after the protein skimmer and the filter sock. so do you think i just need to re design it so the bubble trap comes in tighter to the return pump so i have more room on the other side for the skimmer and the filter sock?

Can you take a picture of your sump. I have Mag 9.5 with no bubbles coming back to main tank. But do have alot of bubbles in sump where the water is entering the sock. Are you using a hose for outlet line or PVC. I have valve control the amount of water. I can take a picture of my sump tomorrow if you would like to see.

ok it isnt pvc coming into the sump its just one of those plastic expensive hoses but yes i can take a picture for u guys i will when i get home, and its weird but the mag 9.5 is so strong like i can see the current in my sump is really powerful and from what i am reading you really dont want that much flow in a sump anyway

also could you guys reccommend a good skimmer to fit in my 20 gallon sump. right now i have a marineland mp100 and i am being told its pretty much useless for my 75 gallon tank, so i was looking to upgrade what do you guys think

I took a lot of advice from rkaragozler and I came up with the following for mine. While it is a 90g sump, the design could be the same.

i like that layout but i dont have any drills in this tank and dont plan to i need everything to be inside also i need a place for a protein skimmer to sit cause i will have that and a refugium. and bubbles are a big problem in my sump for some reason idk why. i feel like because everything in the sump is very tight together your set up is nice you have so much space for every compartment. do sumps need to be big to function properly? im sorry sumps are very new to me

A pic/layout of your sump will help us pinpoint your bubble problem or help you improve it. My DIY sump has the same problem for years when the water level in it was not high enough but I don't really want it to be that high being afraid of sump overflow when the return pump is off. So, I added a "shelve" in the sump just before the return pump intake to put a 100micron filter pad and the problem is solved.

Start by looking at melevs website it gives a good explanation on the ins and outs of sump building. All the ideas given are good but not every sump suits everyone's needs. figure out what your needs and wants are and then sit down design something and then figure out the dimensions. Here's the site:

reverse the sump, the right side is where the skimmer goes, followed by the fuge, the finally your return section. You have to figure out the running level of your skimmer and if it matches the first baffle on the left your okay, if not raise the skimmer with pvc and a piece of acrylic.
Also your running water level is the height of the 3rd baffle from the left.

ok then i will have to drain the sump and re do the baffles because if i reverse the sump the protein skimmer doesnt have any room because that spot was designed for the return pump. and the single baffle on the right is a little bit shorter then the baffle thats in the middle of the bubble trap is that what u mean? if thats the case i would just have to match that with the middle baffle in the bubble trap?
