please help me design my sump

ok whats making the differance tho by putting the skimmer on the other side just so the bubbles have enough space between that and the bubble trap at the other side?

If your drain is on the left all you have to do is rotate the tank, By putting the skimmer opposite the return you are allowing the bubbles to dissipate.

but the skimmer is opposite the return right now, the only differance is the bubble trap is right after the skimmer section if i reversed it the bubble trap will be right before the return pump which makes more sense the only thing i would have to do is re do the single baffle so theirs more room for the protein skimmer and filter sock and ill be ok you think? cause right now if i turned the sump around their still isnt enough room for the skimmer cause that section was designed for where the return pump sits

Sorry maybe I am not explaining it to you right. It should look like this it is a 20 gallon tank that I just designed. The baffle height were off the top of my head, and so was the dimensions for the skimmer section.

Clears it up for me too,thanks.I'm building a sump from a 30g 36 x 12,same design as you gave.I was told to use 4 9'' baffles, it looks like your last baffle is lower than the third.Will same size baffles be ok to use?

Same size baffles would work to certain degree, I like to keep the last 1 at least 1.5-2" lower to stop the waterfall affect, going to the return pump, and it also gives you greater area for volume so top off area is increased.

You mentioned 4 baffles at 9" in height. when you are setting them up.
1st baffle goes flush to bottom of the tank giving you a water level of 9".
2nd baffle gets installed 1-1.5" away from 1st baffle and 1-1.5" away from bottom of tank, this is your bubble trap
3rd baffle gets installed 1-1.5" away from the 2nd and flush to bottom of tank, you are still at a 9" water level.
4th baffle gets installed at the other end of the tank flush to the bottom of the tank, still at 9" of water level.
now here is where the problem begins. when you turn on your return pump it starts to empty your return chamber. when this happens the water level will drop and create a waterfall affect from the 4th baffle.
Now if you make the 4th baffle 1.5-2" lower than the rest, when your pump goes on it will lower the water but not below the height of the 4th baffle, and won't cause that waterfall affect.
now when you install an ATO you adjust it to the running level of 9", this way you always have an extra 1.5-2" of water at all times at the 4th baffle.
