So I Grabbed this old fan out of a G4 I had laying around. I attached it to a 12v power adaptor. Its spinning like a mad man if anyone knows how those g4 fans go off, yall know whats happening. My room is freezing!! Anyway I need to power down on the speed. Can i place a potentiometer in the path to adjust the speed?

PC fans generally have a minimal start up voltage, 6V is probably under it for that fan.

You can get one of these:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811996016

And try the 7V.

You might also want to look at a different fan that's more friendly to various voltages...I'm a big fan of Nexus...I use them all in my custom PC's. Figure out what size (fan diameter) you need and run with that.

A bigger fan at lower voltage (and thus lower RPM) is usually more useful (and quiet) than driving a smaller fan at high voltage/speed. I hate noisy PC's, so I mess around with that till I find the sweet spot.
