yes knowing what size skimmer and return pump would help in building a sump.
as far as the area you want to install it in, you need to brace the area a little more to hold the weight.
Here is a sump that I built for a member here, it is a 15x15x15.
you can build one to your specs of the stand.
hey bro, id suggest a rubber maid bin top or making something to put under the fuge incase of spills so you dont get no mold in the carpet...Been there and you def dont want that...
thanks, im having some noob issues with the plumbing, I ended up buying the Eshoppes NANO overflow box over the DIY PVC, now im not sure how to plumb it 2 1/2 feet down into my sump? Can I just go straight down on the drain using a 45 degree elbow and possibly a Union for disassembly?
As for the return, should I use a WYE check valve? and a union? where do these go?
sorry havent been around in a while, but having unions on pvc pipe will be great, for taking apart and cleaning. I won't recommend using any check valves at all, they do tend to fail.
Well no equipment hanging ur gonna need an overflow box hanging from ur DT cus it ain't rr. As for ur sump u need to know the size of ur skimmer ur gonna use and return pump. As I stated before the MJ900 will not work at least I don't think it will.

The overflow box has a 3/4 bulkhead, Is that the correct size pvc for my 9gal setup? I heard 1 inch is more commonplace. Im just confused about determining what GPH I need on my tank. Here is a quick diagram I have drawn.
you may opt to put in a sock holder to diffuse the incoming water from the waterflow OR pipe it into a DIY PVC spray bar that sits at the water surface with holes drilled all around it and a lot of them so that there is no restriction. That will minimize the splashing and salt creep. after you do that you may not need a baffle at all. The only reasons for the baffle is so that you can maintain the sand/mud in place and so that water runs evenly thru the fuge so that you're maximizing on the capacity of your fuge and to act as a bubble trap. The height of the baffle may be determined based on the optimal water level that a specific skimmer may require. So if the skimmer chamber needs 8" of water than you may end up putting in 3 baffles to difuse the and slow down the water so it doesn't disturb the sand/mud bed.
You can also drill your sump and hook up an external skimmer which is sometimes easier but if the skimmer were to overflow then it would be best to have it in the rubbermaid container that DarkenReef suggested.
If by chance something big goes down your overflow it can clog it enough to the point that water overflows out of your display so just keep that in mind.
Also if the sock gets clogged, it will cause water to splash so make sure that it is set low enough so that any splashing that takes place is far enough below the top of the sump that it can't go over the sump walls.
I would just do a spray bar to diffuse the water on that small of a tank.
If you're going to do a skimmer than you should place the baffle about half the distance from the begining of the sump to the first existing baffle.

which return pump?
can you give us the exact dimensions of the first chamber, and second chamber. (internal)
the height of the baffles also.
as far as your drawing goes.
1-you might want to rethink doing everything in pvc, and use flex hose.
2-the size of the hose will be determined by what return pump you are using.
3-and think about putting the t the other way and add another valve.
