Refinish Stand

Need help with used stand. Its unfinished pine stand. Thinking of getting new hinges and doors as well as paint it black.

Anyone know what primer and paint i should use? Should i sand first? Also where can i get doors? Was thinking of painting black then use stainless steel doors? Or simply paint doors silver?

When I refinished my old stand I used an oil based primer and oil based paint. I also cut the paint with a product called Penatrol. That will thin the pain to eliminate brush marks. It's best that you paint each section one at a time laying the part you want to paint flat so the paint does not run. It will take longer to dry also but you will end up with a very nice finish that is durable and washable.

Not exctly. Still waiting for house to close and first baby on the way this fall. Maybe when the smoke clears ill jump in head first. For now im jumping in feet first. Freshwater. Rimless tank, leds, vortech.... On a freshwater. ;0) i wonder if MR will let me do a tank thread on that. Lol

yes sand the stand with 220 grit sandpaper then use a primer. I prefer oil based primers for anything exposed to high moisture. If can't paint the stand outside then use latex primer and paint. Be sure to lightly sand between coats of primer and paint with 220 and then clean the surface with a tack cloth before applying the next coat. spend the money on a good brush and make sure its the proper bristle type for the paint you're going to use. Otherwise you'll be have bristles stuck in the paint.

This is the stuff I stand by http://www.rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=162&sid=7777502 ...also says it's good on outdoor furniture which should fly for a tank...refinished my daughter's dressers with it and they turned out gorgeous and I would say definitely sand it so that you end up with a clean finish instead of that ugly caked up paint look. I mean it's personal preference but I hate the look of high gloss on furniture...I used a semi-gloss and they really turned out great.

Congrats on the little one! Clowns and nem are still doing great btw. If you decide to dabble with a planted tank let me know...have plants that I could clip and pass your way and extra co2 equipment!

Going back.... Way back. My first freshwater fish (after the goldfish ofcourse) was a geophagus surinamensis. Man i loved those fish. They build stufff with their mouth its hilarious. One time i watched one build a home using drift wood as frame and gravel as surrounding wall. All good till he realized he had caved himself in. Lol. He burst out knocking the whole thing down like WHAT?!? WHAT?!? Lol.

Any surinamensis gets too big about a foot. So i found these...

All in a 80 gallon low iron rimless 48x24x16 by deep blue. Using leds for shimmer mainly actinic and red leds. Im trying to bring some of the reef modern advances to freshwater.

Thanks for the advice greeneyes and jcurry. Glad to hear clowns are doing well. Im thinking my next reef will be a 12g mr aqua long. Only fish i want are clowns just like that and a nem.
