Overflow project

This summer i spent a lot of time setting up and planning my new 29 gal w sump.

long story short im in a single bedroom apt and a quiet system was my main goal.
I decided i would try beanAnimal's/ herbie/ silent overflow. i had everything planned out but then when i went to get my tank drilled by the tank builder at my lfs i was advised against the 2 overflow bulkheads.

I was told that it was unnecessary and just hassle that it was worth. This being my frist sumped tank i thought perhaps i overlooked something and took his advice and installed a single 2in overflow and a 1 inch return.

not until i got it wet and started did i realize the HUGE mistake i made.


Problems:
1. was that i had a huge 2 inch bulkhead w only a pvc 90 (huge open hole for water... and air)
2. I have never heard such loud, obnoxious gurgling from a tank before


i have since put a ball valve on the overflow tubing but am constantly checking it (makes me nervous, small clog and water is all over)

my idea is to get an overflow box and try to get the box to act as a secondary/emergancy overflow like in the beanAnimal set up.

Not exactly sure how it would work, and since overflow boxes are pretty expensive thought id see if anyone else has thoughts on this


thinking it may need to be reversed and have the drilled overflow be the emergency and the box being the main drain.
Again not sure because i decided to drill my tank to avoid the risk associated w overflow boxes

Wow 2"?
if u install a 90 degree PVC straight down to your sump you will get noise. Do a durso standpipe design and just slide on a cap on it no need to glue the cap. You then drill a hole in the cap with smallest bit, this will eliminate the gurgling noise. Also have the PVC pipe submerge 2"-3" in the sump to eliminate any splashes. If you don't know what I'm talking about u can pm me your number and I can send you pic of mine.

Can you do a stand pipe with a tank drilled in the back?

Use that drain hole to go into an external overflow box and then put your herbies in there going straight down. Talk to Richie he helped design and build mine.

the tank is drilled for a 2 inch drain. Get a new 2 inch bulkhead and set it up like a durso with pvc, im sure you can drill a nice hole on top and stop the noise. Your basically doing a durso style drain on the outside of the tank instead of inside the overflow box like it would normally be. OR do what they mentioned above.
