I have a fluval edge 6 gal and wanted to turn my aquaclear 20 into a refugium for under 20 dollars and I did. All you need is an aquaclear 20, the media basket, aquarium silicone, and a basic LED strip light. You start by drying the aquaclear 20 and the media basket, then you break the media basket into 3 sections, the bottom piece and the 2 side pieces.
You should now have something like this

Then you silicone the bottom piece to where the filter outputs water to prevent chaeto from coming out,
And create a baffle using one of the side pieces by placing it to the side where the filter inputs water,

Silicone it there and let it cure for 24 hours,

Then you get a strip LED light, (I used this one, http://bit.ly/18Z8lKI) and silicone it to the aquaclear 20 cover,

Let it cure and add chaeto and your good to go!
I also threw in a bag of purigen under the chaeto and some filter floss in the input section,http://imgur.com/AZpuCbC
And it works great!
Also, some of these images are mine while some aren't and were acquired from other forums to illustrate how to make the refugium better.

looks good but im wondering about the light. im not sure how long it will last like that with all the condensation and salt.

could another option be to secure it to outside back of the filter?

The light is supposed to be water proof, I contacted the seller and he said that if you silicones the backs and sides it could be submersible. Mine hangs right above the water.
