Should I use it?

I've got all the pieces for my tank finally.

Today I took out the back piece to measure for the overflow and bulk head holes.

There's a chip on the side edge it's about 1/4" wide, and it's only 1 1/4" down from the edge.

I hit it with a sanding belt to smooth it out.

Would you use it? also would you put it on the inside where it will get covered by silicone, or outside?

I have a chip like that on my 90. Its on the outside. Haven't had a problem yet. But that doesn't mean that its not causing any problems down the road. Not sure if this chip would eventually get any larger.

More important I would think is how DEEP is it, how thick is the glass and how big of a tank?

yes use it face it out so it's under opposite pressure and doesnt act like a score.

Please explain the physics of the pressure on the outside if the water is on the inside.

i would not, not worth the worry. its not as if the tank is already fill n established.

When you score and break glass the force is pushed against the face the score is on. On a tank, if the chip is on the inside, it would be on the same side as the force is pushing against. Imagine the chip as the score line, now instead of siliconing the galss in place you only clamp i below the line, then exert pressure outwards on the top 1/2. I don't know if that made sense to you, i can't think of a better way to put it.

The pressure is TO the outside, not from the outside.

After looking at your pic again, that does'nt look deep enough to worry about. I have seen a lot of tanks with chips on the edges like that run for years without a problem. I am not telling you it is perfectly safe to do so, just what I've seen.

My plan is to do the cuts and drill the holes. If it survives, I'm going to use it if it breaks I order a new one.

I'm going to put it outside and hit it with silicone. It is tiny. there are bigger chips from where I drilled it.

Got the Closed loop plumbed. It's not glued quite yet. I need to put it on the full tank to get the long runs of pipe correct.
