DIY Skimmer?

Until now I have not had a skimmer on my tank, but feel i need one because my new tank will be more complicated, I'm no longer using UGF but rather a DSB. Is it worth trying a DIY skimmer or should i just buy one? What are you guys expiriences? How much would it cost me to make one?

I made a 48" Beckett style skimmer for ~$50. It ain't pretty enough to be something you'd want standing in your living room, but hell, my tank is in the basement!

It works like a dream. If you're remotely handy, working with PVC pipe and fixtures couldn't be much easier.
