Putting overflow drains in the back wall?

I've got a tank that I want to build overflows in but it has a tempered glass bottom. Are there any pitfalls to putting the drains piping near the bottom in the back wall? Also, since I have the option, I'd like to hear some thoughts on plumbing the return line over the back glass versus through the back. Anyone done this?
