I found this while searching for tubing and thought it was interesting. I was wondering what the story is behind this joint though. Why so much slovent? Wouldn't this mar the bottom real bad?

I also thought it was interesting how this guy trims the edges "free-hand". That's gotta take some skill! I know he has a guide, but still.

That's not freehand, that's a pretty standard way to prep the edges of sheets.

Those guys aren't using the same glue you are. They are probably using ethylene dichloride, which is extremely toxic, but doesn't evaporate as fast, so it doesn't tend to cause blushing, because there is no acetic acid in it.

Also, I'm betting their glue area is climate controlled, which helps alot.

I saw this picture and see why it might not matter as much too. Do you ever use this type of reinforcement on larger projects?

Nope, never. It's a waste, to me. They should use the right thickness of acrylic to start with. Also, it's to cover up the scratches from where they cut out the inside squeezeout.
