Can any one tell me the best online source for DIY metal halide compnents?

I planning on installing 2-150 watt, 10,000K double end lamps in my 48"x18" AGA oak canopy. I choose this type of lamp because of thier lower profile. I only have a little over 6" to the water surface.

I would prefer electronic ballasts if the will extend lamp life.

For reflector material, I was thinking about lining the canopy with white
formica counter top material, but I'm concerned the bulbs will be too hot for this. Will I need a metal reflector ?

And Finally I,d like to do this for around $400 or so, otherwise I could go with a 4 bulb VHO retro for about $300

Any advice ?

It will be too hot, and a metal reflector is highly recommanded.

For source, check with some of the hardware vendors that sells MH kits.

Why don't you look for a used 175W dual retro setup. There are always good deals in the for sale section. Adam

You can get flashing material from HD and bend it into the shape of a spider reflector. For the heat issue, just add some small computer fans on either end - blowing in of course, to cool it down a little. Blowing in to extend the life of the fans - pulling air out , you would pull the salt mist air and the fans would rust in no time.

If you go VHO's or even T5's you can DIY for better than the $300 you mentioned.

For the best price -just browse the different online realtailers, there is a big list on reef central

I think Champion lighting has good pricing as does hellolights. Many of RDO's sponsors carry MH parts and pieces. I would shop around and just buy them from whoever has the best pricing.

Check the For sale forum, someone's got a 2x150DE for $300.
