maybe i am splitting hairs here but what is the best depth, width and spread for these?

i want to just do this once. if i glue the thing in and the the teeth aren't deep enough i don't know how easily i can remove it and cut out more... on the other hand if i go too deep i will be seeing an air gap below the rim and that drives me nuts.

somebody be a sport and help me out, eh? :D

Why have them at all?

I have found not having them is better. With more surface area for the water to flow over, the water doesn't splash or create air bubbles.

If you are afraid someone in your tank will get in it, then cut some egg-crate to fit just inside the overflow and that will keep them out.

More surface area for the water to flow over will also mean more water can flow without restrictions.

This also means less noise.

If you aren't sure what I mean let me know I can find the url for an article on this.

You could make it adjustable. Make a the piece with the teeth on it so you can slide it up and down.
