A friend recently told me that large tanks are frequently built out of plywood with a glass front and that the plywood is sealed with a non-toxic epoxy or some other non-toxic sealant. I have searched the internet for something like this and have not been able to find anything. Can anyone out there suggest a product that would work for this application?

I believe that when they speak of epoxy they mean epoxy resin like what is used in fiberglass and some people have used fiberglass too so basically they are making a big hot tub with a glass front because it is cheap and strong. I have read also of people using pool sealant, I'm sure this would adhere to wood and I believe that the guy that made his 4000 gal tank in his basement used this. I too have thought about building my own tank to save money and give myself a challenge. I think the hardest part is finding the cut to size plexiglass or safety glass.

I don't remember exactly where on there site it is but on www.garf.org there are plans to make a plywood tank. I even have a 180 gallon plywood tank in my garage right now. They are easy to build and save a lot of money over all glass or acrylic tanks.

Just make a box, seal it with good 2 part epoxy paint or pool paint and install a "window". Finding the glass or acrylic is actually pretty easy call your local glass shops and most should be able to get a custom size for you or will know who to call.
