I am new to this and i want to save some $$ on lights for the tank, I have a 30 gallon mini reef (well soon to be....empty tank but have canister filter, skimmer, and some rock already in place.) this is my first setup ever and i am looking at different lighting solutions...DIY is not out of the question I have done some electrical work in the past(car audio) so i know some of the basics. If you can help me out or point me in the right direction for a cost effective lighting solution (cuz i am college student) that would be greatly appreciated

Get MH ballast from hydroponic or reef place and wire a 250W setup your self... or you don't feel you need that much light?

As a fellow 30g owner, go with the 250 or even a 400 if you can.. MarineDepot has a 400w 6500K kit for under $150 shipped that I've been eyeballing..

Personally, I went with a 175w 10k MH originally, but I'm looking to upgrade and it's only been a year. - Oh, and count on going with actinic supplements too, especially if you plan on using that 6500K bulb that comes in the kit.. I still don't have actinics and I'm regretting it.
