I drill several holes just below the water level, about 1/8 inches away from the light. Seveal holes so that even if one snail sit one hole, the other can break the return water. It is easy enough to check by just looking at it. There will be minor water flow throught these holes to keep them open. sometime coraline algae can close these holes up, but this can fixed easy enough by poke a small stick through it to keep the hole open.

One more thing to consider: Depending on the size of the plumbing a small hole may not be enough to completely disrupt the siphon. Instead it continues to suck a small amount of air along with the large volume of water back-flow (been there, done that). The 1/4 in should be ok, but check it. If it doesn't quickly stop the back-flow when clean then it certainly won't if it gets dirty. If in doubt use a larger diam tubing (they also make the same stuff in 3/8")
