venturi not venturing???

I just finished my first diy project. A modified "world's ugliest skimmer"
My skills pretty much suck, but it did go together rather easily.

Only the maxi jet 1200 won't venturi. Yes, I installed it correctly, but it just wants to shoot water across the room. So, then I installed the air line in front of the impaler on the inlet end and no bubble there either.

Anyone have any ideas for me on how to take care of this. Or can some tell me what I did wrong?

Did you get the venturi kit for maxijet? If the back pressure is too high for the powerhead, venturi won't work... think of the air intake as a hole in a pipe that leak water instead of sucking in air as expected.
