PC bulbs: How far from surface of water?

I have a 29 gallon and I am in the planning stages of a hood. I have 2x55pc and 2x65pc kits already but just haven't built the hood. I will have two 12v 80mm computer fans running at 6v; one on each side of the hood.

I am planning to have the PC bulbs a little over 3" from the top of the tank. Is this too far or too close? Any recommendations on a reflector? All comments or suggestions welcomed. Thanks!

That would be fine. You may have to wipe the bulbs off regularly to keep them clean, but it will be worth it to keep those lamps close to the water so that you get maximum lighting in your tank.
