I'm planning a sump based on a 15G long AGA tank for my 37G display tank.
I want to include an area for my skimmer, a refugium and a return. Is there any rule or advice concerning the relative size of each zone. I assume the refugium should be as big as possible, but what about the return area?

Also, relative depths of each, I assume the refugium should be deeper, but what about the others, skimmer (governed by the skimmer model) and return?

My layout will be from an overflow box down to the sump, with the flow split with most of it going to the skimmer and part of it going to the refugium. Both the skimmer and refugium will drain back into the middle return area, probably through baffles.

i.e.

skimmer --> return <--- refugium

Aschke,
Welcome to RDO if nobody's said so!

There's no set in stone rule for sump creation. Whatever works for your setup is what works!

Just remember, that the evaporation level will effect the center section. So don't make it too small. I did, and if my tank evaporates more than 3 or 4 cups my pump starts sucking air. I have a liter meter, so most days it's not a problem.

Good luck, and post some pics!
