sump technicality

is there any good reason that a sump has to be an aqarium? can i use a big rubbermaid thing? i have a glass tank i could use, but to be honest, i won't be able to move it alone, and no one wants to halp me. (i live on the third floor) so can i use a big tote?

Yes you can. I had a rubber maid sump on a tank. Down side is it is hard to add baffles if necessary. Also, they bow and have to possibility of splitting.

There are a lot of differant plastic totes you can use for this. Rubbermaid now makes soem that are very thick and not as prone to the bowing. If you do get one that bows, leave the lid on it and just cut holes in it, this gives some extra side support.
