I want to glue the overflow on my tank today, but i need to know should I mask off the tank and paint it first? I do not want to see into the OF. Also, will weldon work through Rust-oleum Plastic spray paint.

What area are you painting? :?

Anyway, weldon does not work thru the paint, so you must either cement the part together first, or, if you want to do more work and get the same result, you can do either of the two below:

1, paint the parts, then plane/sand/strip the paint off the area that need to be cemented, and make sure you do it in such a way that it won't craze when you apply the solvent.

2, mask off the area to be cemented, paint the part, than cement the parts. Tricky think is that you need to make sure: a, the masked area matches. b, the paint does not get in the way of the cement later.

In other words, cement before paint unless you can't help it.

I am painting the back of my acrylic tank black. I masked off a 1/2" area centered on my cement lines for the Overflow. The overflow is an external, and I dont want to see inside it.

But then the paint will be inside the tank....

Since inside the overflow is the same as inside the tank.

why not use some other method to mask that area, such as a piece of black acrylic glued inside the overflow

I just wouldn't want the paint on the inside of my tank for some reason.

I wanted the inside of the OF black, so I wont have to see it. Many people have used the plastic spray paint to hide PVC inside their tanks, so I wasnt worried about the paint in contact with the water. Plus it will hae plenty of curing time dry. heres some pics:

With the pics, I see what you are doing, and put 2 and 2 together. I would use a piece of black acrylic inside the overflow like knucklehead suggest, or paint the outside the of the overflow box black and leave the area where the box covers clear. But I guess it is no big deal.

It is less of an issue with you, but does anyone heard how good does these paint stay on the PVC/acrylic? I wonder if it will comes off with the coraline algae if you scrap it... ?

I havent heard scientific results, but their are a number of people on RC and NR.com who have been using the Krylon Fusion and Rust-oleum (for plastic) spray paints (inside their tanks) for a long time, with no ill effects. I do not think it will come off with scraping. The plastic paints are supposed to fuse with the plastic.
