I see. Depends on the design of the overflow, it may or may not do any difference when you add an additional u-tube.
There are three main factors that determines the GPH rating of a HOT overflow. 1, the size , shape and number of the siphon. 2, the size of the bulkhead (drain size) and the relative water level. If the limiting factor of your overflow is just the U-tube, then yes, it will increase the rate. If it is any other factor, then it won't make much of a difference.
With that said, consider the cheap price of the U-tube (and you can DIY it with spring, or just use some PVC pipe and adoptors) it maybe worthwhile to give it a try and see.
