6ft*1.5ft=9ft^2
9ft^2*1.5ft=13.5ft^3
13.5ft^3*7.5gal/ft^3=101.25gal

bob's got a great idea, unfortunately what if wasn't a "nice" sized tank

6' x 18" x 18" ? remember the title topic is for the mathematically challenged, sure I could do it in my head but I'm not mathematically challenged.

3 * 6 * 3 * 3 / (4 * 2 * 2 ) :)

Yea it gets a little "tricky" with fractions. And I am an engineer and even more importantly went through high school and college before calculators were avaialable.

Just a shot:

6'x18"x18"

6'x1.6=9*1.5=13.5

3/4 if 12 is 9 3/4 if 1.5 1 and 1/8=1.125

10.125*10=101.25

72x18x118/231=100.987 accurate to 3 fighures

using 6" instead of 6'

1/2'x1.5'x1.5'

1/2x1.5=3/4x1.5=6/8+3/8=9/8

1 1/8*3/4=3/4+ 3/4*1/10+ plus a little more (cheating lol)

.75+.075+a little more

.825+ a little more

8 1/4 g + a little more.

6x18x18/231=8.41 a little off but still in the ball park. 9/8*7.5 is actually 8.4375 just rounded to get an answer in the ball park the still could be done in your head.

But your right. Especially if say a tank is 20" high. The fractions to become harder.

Aw, hell. Get a gallon jug and count how many it takes to fill the thing up.

Sometimes we geologists have to help you engineers out. :lol:

If we design something anyone can use then we are out of business.

Better yet get a computer than can handle many billions of calculations per second, then find a message board and ask someone to do it for you :)

Actually, you would get a more accurate count if you filled the tank with Plant LIFE first....
