Anybody have a successful DIY check valve?

In my case I have a refuge return hose which is siphoning out water from the sump to the refuge. (there is a pump that is at the end of the hose and its unplugged because the natural siphoning works perfectly.)

One idea I had is to drill a hole into the refuge return hose; rubber cement another piece of hose into it, and hang the new hose in the sump above water. And the pump would now have to run in this case.

My guess is the new air line hose will allow into the return hose, and cut off the water going into the fuge if the power should go out.

Any DIY's or validation of my idea is much appreciated

syphons are generally a bad idea for maintaining constant water level between tanks.

Is the fuge higher than the sump? if so, pump the water into the fuge and let gravity take the water back to the sump.

is it set up like a sump? if so you need an overflow of some kind. How about splitting your tank return to feed the fuge and have the fuge drain into the sump?

I am confused here. why is a check vavle needed? will try to attach schematic which does not require a check valve.
