Lemme say upfront: DIY is not my thing. What I need is so ridiculously simple, though, that I suspect even I can manage to do it.

I need a rectangular riser, 7" tall, 5" front to back and 6" long. It's just for a skimmer to sit on top of, nothing more complicated than that. Acrylic, glass, plastic... any inert material is fine.

Any places online where I can have the materials cut and shipped to me?

You might take a look at your stores. What I use is a storage box with holes. Kinda like an old milk crate. they were only about $1 or so.

just an idea.

Yeah, if I didn't need to work with some rather specific dimensions I'd just scavenge a piece of tupperware or something

But I'm really kind of stuck on needing pretty much exactly 7" tall and between 4.7" and 5" front-to-back, so I figure the only way I'm going to get just what I need is to have it cut to size.

Then you can use light diffuser egg crate and cut it to size. The kind with 1/4" (or so) squares. And glue them together or even use the plastic cable ties.

Shouldn't be too hard to do. But then I use that egg crate for many things in my systems. Here is some egg crate holding up lights over a new 10g FW. Just for reference

It is usually in the ceiling tile sections of building supply stores. 4'x2' section is like about $10 or so. It is used in droped ceilings.

Hmm. Might work. Only problem is that the top pice has to be solid, no gaps like with eggcrate. I suppose I could find a flat piece of plastic that I could cut to sit on top of the structure, though.

Thanks Bob. Gives me an idea to work with.

Well, a lot of looking and $6.70 later I've got the cut acrylic pieces I need being sent to me. Now I just have to figure out how to glue it together right 8O

Bubble gum works well. Just make sure you get as much of the sugar off as possible.... ;)

What about just using sugarless gum instead? Or does something like Dentyne lack the bonding power required?

Dentyne is not reef safe. If you want something better, I recommand denture adhesive like Fixodent. Get the original favor instead of mint... ;)

Seriously, it is pretty easy to cement acrylic if the edge is finished properly. Are the seller aware of that you are going to cement them? Most people use WeldOn acrylic cement for this, and for a non-structural project like your, it should be pretty easy to do.

Dude,

T&T plastic land
Church St a block or so below canal.

Or ask nice and I might have a few pieces of 1/4" clear sitting around.

Appreciate the thought, B, but I've got my ghetto-MacGuyver parts coming and I think in the end I can wing it. If you hear really loud cursing coming from Bay Ridge though, don't be surprised if it's me :D
