thanks for the advice

trido i have read the durso pages, cheers

ill be going with a surface skimmer box, i wont have a bulkhead in the tank wall,so thats a 45mm hole for letting the water into the chamber, so the durso is basically to make the overflow chamber quiet,so the water doesnt have to fall to the end of the chamber to get out to the sump, i get it now, the overflow chamber im going to make for the durso to sit in will be 6"x6"x18" the stand pipe will be 18" high with the end cap just under the top of the chamber, the hole in the tank wall is 4" from the top of the tank so that will mean the street elbow will have to be just below that hole at 13" high in the chamber

am i on the right track here? what do u think bealsbob

Not necessarily. I would probably make it at about 14.5" and start with that. Dont glue it until you have the bugs worked out. At 13 inches the water will fall into the bottom of your internal box and you may not like or want that. Make sure to build your internal surface box tall enough to raise the water level about one inch below the top of the tank.

I would start with the external over flow glued in place and the durso taller than I want. I would also build the external as tall as the tank, (just in case). I would then plumb the whole tank as if I were ready to stock it. I wouldnt mount the internal overflow yet. Put the durso in place, fill with water, run the return pump, and adjust the levels of the internal overflow (tank)height and the height of your durso until you think you have a winning combination. You may find that the teeth on your comb are too small or too large. This will be your last chance to work the small bugs out. Drain the tank and then mount the internal overflow at the height that worked best. This way you know that you have a tested and approved system that works before everything is 100% permanent.

thanks trido

i have my stand built so ill be making the durso and overflow chamber tomorrow

ill use 1 1/4" pipe , do i really need to use a 1" bulkhead on the bottom of the chamber with a reducer for the 1 1/4" or can i use a 1 1/4" tank connector instead, or will just make the durso noisey and make it a waste of time all together (considering im doing a durso to have a quiet tank)

I you want to use a 1.25" bulk head with the 1.25" durso pipe you should be just fine. I was using a one inch set up the same way with no problems. I believe that over sizing the durso allows for maximum drainage. A larger bulkhead now will leave room for more options in the future. :D
