So, after the mod are you still going to get the new skimmer you are so excited about? What is your guestimated life expectancy for the thread on the wheel? Was that a sedra pump? I have a new G-3, and of course would love a way to get even more performance out of it.

i think i might get the BM anyway. i was bored tonight so i decided to mod a spare impeller i had laying around. I am on the list for a bubblemaster. prolly 6-8weeks before i get a confirmation call if i still want it. so i have some time to think about it.

I originaly set this thing up with the ties flipped around on the back. but it made an awfull noise. so i pulled it and reversed the ties and the noise was gone.

i am gonna run the unit overnight to see what happens. the threadwheels by ATI look to be similar product to a dls type media. i hunted around for it localy but had no luck. i might order a batch and see what happens.

there is another guy who moded is genx 6000 ER-cs250. he told me the thing skims like mad. so i might just ride this out... i dunno

i had a tank mishap and had to replace $1k of flooring. so my budget just got kickedin the jewels....

another thing too. i tried to overlap and stagger the gutter guard to not allow too much of the same pattern. in a ahope to allow better chopping of air.

I have a ASM G-2. Anything to mod to get better skimming, I'm all for.

it skimmed well overnight about the same volume that i get in about a day was produced. i have ordered an airflow leter and some dls 5 material from aquatic -eco. i am gonna do another mod when the stuff comes in.

try and check out the link at RC and see what you think.

Could you be so kind as to post the link here. I'm kind of RC illiterate as I have never really surfed that site before.

Did you have to move your venturi? I would like to TRY this on my EuroReef (old model), but don't want to mess with a new venturi. I thought I had an extra wheel somewhere in case I messed something up.

I just tried doing this...I botched it up. My impeller got sucked up into the grinder. I had to trim all the plastic off and then just use the 4 little holes to secure it on.

Really botched it. I got it to work. I could only get 2 mesh things on it. It still works, but not as I wanted it to...sigh..

Just going to buy a Deltec.

I am afraid to hack up my needle wheel skimmer. I modded my venturi on my sedra 5000 and wow. I will start a new thread because this is a thread wheel thread. :P

What did you do to it? Where's the thread? :D I still haven't put together the courage to do a recirc mod to my G3. Well, the courage and the extra parts. :P

I want to try the venturi mod, though. And then have someone push me to do the recirc mod! 8)

OK, After simply doing the mod on the venturi I thought I would be satisfied with the air flow because I didnt think I could get much better. A 25 page thread over at RC convinced me that I couldnt go wrong and I did it. I couldnt find the gutter guard at lowes so I picked up a Quickey heavy duty garage and grill scubber and WOW. I have the bubble line near the bottom of the neck and am still getting wet skim mate. Ill post pics some time in the morning .

is that garage and grill scrubber plastic?
I dont think so. If it is it feels more like metal. I am now using a 3-M product that is similar but seems to pull more air into the skimmer and lasts longer.

Any reason why you didn't go with the gutter guard, Duane? And what is the 3-M product you're using?

Hi Guy’s,
Just joined Reef.org but I am long time standing member on other boards. Done both these mods 3M mesh and the gutter guard. Presently use the mesh as that I found I got better air. Either way drop the tie wraps and go to a store that sells R.C. Kits (remote control planes or boats) there are three types of Super Glue Light, Medium and Heavy. Just put a couple of drops on the mesh and lightly press against the back plate. Use tweezers instead of your fingers as that you do not want to totally flatten the mesh pad. Gutter guard doesn’t matter as that it won’t collapse. Use the medium as that it not only glues but also fills gaps so you can shape the #m mesh. Been using mine for over year and have had it apart to clean but still works like new.

Glad to hear it. I just recently (last night) modded my Euroreef Rs80 with sedra3500 and the zip ties seem to affect the functionality of the impellar in general. I will have to try the superglue in lorder to keep zip ties off the pump casing on the back of the impellar plate.
