Hello all, I will soon be setting up a sump (if i can get everything figured out)....just a little 10 gallon for my 29 to get some equiptment out of the way. At the moment I have a Rena Smartfilter size 30 (waterfall, no canister yet *sighs* :( )...shes quite large for what she is. Now if the reef gods are with me I will hopefully be able to move it to the sump to get its bulk out of sight...does anyone know if a waterfall filter would work in a sump? or how it would work...or be best set up for that matter, if it is possible? The sump is yet to be built, I have a design in mind but it is very much so subject to change, all ideas are appreciated. Thanks!!!

the hangontheback filter will work on the sump, but you should consider getting a skimmer instead unless you are doing fish only. These HOB filter can generate a lot of nitrate unless you clean it very frequently.

Hmm thats frightening. I get my water tested weekly and havent had a nitrate problem yet...but now im on the edge of my seat haha. A skimmer is on my "to get" list, in fact theres a variable space being left for it in my sump design. do you think using the skimmer and my HOB in combination would just suck too much out of the water?

hob filter can be discontinued once your skimmer kick in. As long as the spill over from the skimmer and filter does not overflow your sump when the power is out, there is no physical problem with running both at the same time.

There is no such thing as sucking out too much out of the water..

I would get rid of the HOB.. Get a sock and put it in the return from the overflow.

Save the money you would spend on a canister and buy a skimmer...

Do you think you have enough space in there for a small fuge??

Don't buy a prism or seaclone.. LFS's commonly sell these cause they are cheap alternatives to good skimmers.

For a tank that size an AquaC Remora would be great, if you need a HOB.

eh i think i could squeeze in a spot for a fuge if i arranged things properly but that wasnt really the idea for the project, i just want to get the heater and filter etc out of sight. why do you ask? do u think a fuge is necessary?

That AquaC looks nice, and the HOB feature would really help considering the tiny size of my planned sump. Thanks for the tip!

p.s. i did some more research on the AquaC Remora, minimum tank depth must be 12.5 inches and i was planning on putting it on a ten gallon, do you think the half inch would kill the whole plan?

two altenatives.
1, put the sump on a half inch tall "table"
2, put the skimmer on a half inch tall sump-side extender.

(I did both fixes for a CPR bakpak  )

I would use a 10g plastic container as a refugium and have it drain to a smaller (5g or so) container for the actual sump.

eh i was kind of trying to avoid the refugium, my goal of the sump is to get things out of sight instead of more things into sight. plus i dont have any species that would need one, theryre all smaller docile fish. good concept tho...
