it's for NO (normal output) florescents, not HO (High output) lamps like t5. it will light them (probably) but not at the recommended wattage.

Look for a workhorse 2 or 3. the ballasts are about $18 and work great for t5's.

NO, T5s do not work on T12 ballasts.

No, it will NOT work for your T5s. It's a T12 ballast. Ballasts are lamp specific. T5s are either Standard Output or High Output, 24w is a 2ft HO. You will need to get the right ballast for the lamp you want to use. (I'm an architectural lighting designer and work with this stuff all day.) T5s are generally a much better choice than T12s as they are much more energy efficient (more lumens per watt). If it does happen to light a T5 (which I doubt it will) it will either burn out the lamp or ballast after a short time. Also, one of the functions of a ballast is to limit the current in the arc going through the lamp. Without it the current will rapidly increase until the lamp experiences non-passive failure (iow: it explodes). You don't want to take that chance. Also, it looks like the unit has sockets which certainly will not work with a T5 due to the pin configuration.

Thanks, That's more of what I was looking for (some kind of why it don't work) The thing I don't understand, according to Fulhams website the WH3looks like it will run anything from T12, T5 etc and PC...I have an 80 watt ballast I was only looking to get 48 watts out of....so I thought it might work on that...No big deal, it was for my fuge not the tank.

ok, to be entirely accurate some ballasts will run a combination of lamps. The specs should tell you exactly which ones. I did look at the Fulham web site and to tell the truth, it's a bit confusing. Their specs are not very ... specific.

Tell me about it...lol
I have 2 more made by advance that also NO.T12/T10/T8 RS
but good for up to 40W per lamp...

I found T5's on the net 6500k for about $2.50 each so
I figured it would be perfect for the fuge (instead of a
shop light with a cheap CF)
