I'm looking to drill my 50gal breeder I just wanted to know if i just arbitrarily pick a spot or do I have to drill in certain spots
I'm looking to drill the back glass and trying to keep the holes as high as possible maybe about 3-5 inches from the top of the tank

i did mine 4 inches from the top and 5in from the edge.. then used a 90 and a legnth of tube with a screened top to adjust the water level..
this is what i planned on doing, but i was wondering if the line would be quieter at a certain position? tell me if im making sense? i dont want it to sound like a toilet bowl
thanks

keep the flow rate to abt 10 times the gallonage of the tank and you shouldt get that noise.. but i would go with a 700gph pump with a ballvalve on the return side.. valve it down to reduce noise and flow.. and get your water flow form your hydors or mp10.. hope this helps

Mike, the 10x rule of thumb is acceptable. However, it is just that, a guideline, not a fact.

More importantly though, the 10x rule won't make his system more or less quiet which was his initial question. The efficiency of his plumbing makes all the difference in the world when it comes to the noise coming from it. I've seen low flow, moderate flow and high flow all as noisy as the proverbial toilet he mentioned. I've also seen very high sump flow that was virtually silent.

Oh, and please, no apology necessary. We all are here to learn, and help others.

with drilled drains.. what you pump in will flow out.. gravity helps you.. depending on the size of the plumbing and the angles you use it will affect the noise.. but yes once its all up and running i always put a ballvalve on my return side to adjust the flow rate .. look up modified durso system.. itll give you more ideas if you havent drilled the tank yet..
