So is this hooked up to a tub of water or a sink? I'm trying to understand as I'm about to do my plumbing for the first time. I haven't put in for a WC and wonder about it. Will you have an ATO too?

it can b connected to a sink or tub(im going to use a bucket so i know how much im taking out) its not a must it just makes life easy.

yes i also have ato (will turn off when doing this)

The reactor tee looks great, exactly what I was thinking about.

In my opinion the lowest BV on the return line should be moved above the WC tee.
It is redundant where it is but if you moved it you could speed up your WC by closing off all your accessories and tank and pumping water out of your sump.
We would do fuel transfers on marine diesel engines this way.

This set up will not work. let me draw something and post.
the reason why is because you can not have both of the t's on the left side like that, if you look at it you have nothing restricking flow for the upper part that is going back into the tank, water will flow the the widest area that is open.

I agree. When you do water changes water will be pumped back into the tank as well. I'm curious about something else too and maybe those with similar designs can clarify. If you're using the return pump to do water changes aren't you draining only the water in the return chamber of the sump? How do you get around that?

yes when you t off to do water changes you can't use the pump to empty, unless you have a separate container that your pump sits in that is 10-20% of your water volume. You would do a water change by using gravity feed from the return line. I know it sounds hard but its not. It is just as if you would put a hose in to your tank and siphon it out.

he could close off all the ball valves except the WC one but that would only mean he's pumping out the water in that specific chamber

In thinking about it, water coming from your tank via the drain will still overflow into the return chamber which will be emptied by the return pump anyway during water changes. So your water change volume would be whatever water is drained from the dt into the sump plus the water in your return chamber. Does that make any sense?

Depends on how big your return section is.

When I do a water change my 30 gallon sump is filled to 100% of operating level and when I shut my main, I have approx 15-20 gallons in a 100 gallon system. This would work really well for me.
I agree, not so much for someone with a small return section.

This would pass the return flow through three 90deg elbows. Each one restricts flow.
Also, this doesnt address what you were saying about the WC issue. You are still removing the same tidal volume during a WC.
