Skimmers skimmers skimmers

After being in the skimmer of the month club and still looking for skimmer that makes me happy. I always read that even on a nutrient poor tank a skimmer should produce skim-mate. If this is true why are there more skimmer than car manufacturer's. We run bio pellets / vodka / a whole slue of other methods to keep our system clean on nitrates and phosphates . I thought this was the skimmers job. Maybe I am wrong . I am trying to keep this post clean no company bashing or company names. Just your thought on what a skimmer should do or are we wasting money on poorly designed skimmers. :smash:

i have an swc and it pull a lot of crap out. i also run 2 socks that clog in 3-4 days. run bio pellets, gfo and still have 32ppm nitrates and .05 phos. so it seems their all needed.
plus the skimmer is a good oxygenator of the water.
