Protein skimmer... problem....?

Hi all, not sure if this is something i should be worried about or not.

im working on upgrading my tank, have a new skimz skimmer and i filled the tank up today with waste RO water and tap water to do a leak test/wet run. I figured "hey lets turn on this new skimmer and see how badass it is" well i turned it on and it seems to just be spitting out large bubbles and the water level in the chamber is not very much higher than in the compartment. maybe about 1/2" higher.

Im thinking maybe its just doing absolutely nothing because theres absolutely nothing in the water worth skimming out, but i cant help but wonder if i have a problem child on my hands.

You know it only works in salt water right?

it works with a little bit of vinegar as well.

ive never actually attempted to run a protein skimmer on tap water in the past to know that it wouldnt do anything. Maybe i should have just waited until i i for some salt and organics in the tank before i opened my mouth. :headache::type::banghead:
