Im ready to snap, I invested so much time and money with a hobby that I just love but I dont have any luch with Chillers. I whent thru 4 chillers in 2 yrs. My tank is a 225, total water volume 400gallons. I bought a over sized unit, Oceanic 1 hp chiller $1,300 last year becasue the others just didnt cool my system. My frst issue with this chiller is if you set it at 78 the temp will creep up 2+ degrees before turning on. Ok well thats nothing, Then I have temp probe issues more than 3 times so the company would send out replacement parts and I would fix it. Then give it few months and again. Now the capasitor melts so I have to replace that so I do. Then It just would not cool so I make my 50th call to tech and the finally say we are sending you a new unit. Hurray the send it, I still have the old one. But after 2 weeks of use the units is on but the compressor will not start. Man Im at my wits end. I just invested thousands of dollars in SPS stuff and Im a finatic with keeping things perfect. Why does this keep happening to me.I lost th tech line # so I cant yell at them. I might go buy my 5th chiller tommorow, how makes the best one on the market? God please help me :irked:

Sorry for your luck , or lack of good luck. You would think Oceanic would make a good chiller. OI dont know who makes a good one, but I hope you find peace, and good luck.

I have 4- 250w halides with 4 39w actinics. I have a few fans running also. Not sure why my tank heats up so quickly. My wet room is in a 12' x 12' concrete room I made half below grade, you would think that would help also

Hey man I feel your pain, chillers seem to be the most unreliable pieces of equipment we have on our tanks. I have used many different chillers and had all sorts of issues, but two chillers seem to always work well for me.

First one-
http://www.aquariumspecialty.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=40_43_80&products_id=118

This one is nice cause its a chiller heater combo in one, very accurate and reliable

Second-
http://www.marinedepot.com/JBJ_1_1_...J_Lighting-JB1111-FICHINTCBCFR-JB1157-vi.html

If you go with JBJ make sure you get the COMMERCIAL LINE, these are rock solid chillers, I have never had any issues with these machines

Good luck, and don't mess around cause SPS don't like temp fluctuation!

Believe it or not,Chillers need cooling off as well as the room gets hotter, the chiller is in danger of blowing out.I know the chiller adds heat to the room so I add a fan to blow behind it to keep the ambient temp underneath the manufacturers specs. Also depends on the brand too.I depend on my chiller during the Summer months.

the best chiller you could buy is a aqua logic with chillers you want to keep it simple and that is what aqua logic does they use a commercial condensing unit (compressor ,fan, electric components) pair that up with a ranco controller and you should be good. i have owned a aqua logic and i have worked in the refrigeration field for over 20 years.

Hey salty, like the others say looks like the main problem is the heat from the chiller itself. you might want to remove the heat exchanger and have it actually mounted outside the house and the compressor inside with the use of a preassure switch. should help keep it working with no problem maybe even better.

just recived my Tradewind 1 hp chillr esterday and finished with my friend John plumbing it in last night, 9pm. My wife is so great and understanding. This chiller is bullett proof. I changed a few things and added another pump dedicted to the chiller. Iwaki 100 pulls water form the sump into and thruthe chiller back up to the tank. Second pump Blueline 70hd does the same thing but bypass's the chiller back to the tank. Holy moly I have flow in this tank. I could take out all my Tunzies and wavy sea's if I wanted to. I will program the chiller today and fie it up. Hey if I take pictures could someone help me post them to add some zest to this thread.

Thanks Bill ---------- Oh yea bought the chiller brand ew never used from a seller on Reef Central and he live's in Ct, Man I got lucky

guy come by and scope my system out, we spoke before I think. My wet room is ventilated and open to outside, Chiller also had a spare fan blowing thru it for added circulation. I will duct out the exhaust on the new chiller because its a huge momba jomba

Curious about something - on the chiller you had all of the issues with - what brand was it & were you running the required flow (min - max) through it?

How do you plan to vent the chiller to the outside? (something I tried in the past without success)

I have 3 SW tanks in my basement office - my solution was to buy a portable A/C -which easilt vents to the outside through the window..and I LOVE it - me & the tanks all stay nice and cool. It's set at 72 during the day and 74 at night. Tanks all stay at 78 during the day. The 120 has 8 T5's on it and another tank is running MH's. I do have one Tunze fan (with temp probe) on the 120 to keep the air moving within the canopy.

Happy you found a solution :)

...My frst issue with this chiller is if you set it at 78 the temp will creep up 2+ degrees before turning on....

That's a controller issue. I have used separate dual stage controllers and that issue should be resolved.

On my chiller, I bought a used one that was several years old, and that was 4 years ago. Just cleaned it, top to bottom last year. Works awesome.

So you can save money by buying used, as long as they are in good shape.

Tradewind chillers use Copeland Compressor/Condensers. Copeland makes the best in the commercial refrigeration business.

I think aqualogic uses Copeland compressors also but I'm not sure.

Most chillers recommend the 2 degree rise before turning on. When a chiller turns on/off too often it is bad.
