my 10 gallon nano tank has just finished cycleing. I bought one 4 striped damsel and on the first day it was doing ok. but it was hiding behind the fikter a lot. my damsel on the second day was swimming kinda funny. kinda side ways. it stays at one spot for a few seconds leang a little to the right and left. then it goes off and swims fine. i got it at petco and it seemed fine at the store tank. i kept the tank water from the tank at the store in a bag just incase of anything happening. Do you know whats happening to my fish? is it stress? i tested the water from petcos tank and i tested mine the results were exactly the same. but there was this one time i changed the filter and this black liquid was floating on the tank water then a few mins later it disapeared. (but i dont think that has anything to do with it) please help me!!!!!

how long was your cycle? what filter/media are you using? seems your fish is a bit stressed. what test kits are you using?

FYI petco livestock is not the healthiest stock.

hope he comes back around.

Why wouldn't an unknown black liquid floating on the tank water, not have anything to do with an ailing fish? Plus, what were the results of your testing, specifically the salinity?

the problem with lfs fish is that they look good but sometimes they come up with complications only after they are in our tanks a few days later.give a break down on your parameters.is he eating?the black stuff that spilled in your tank is just carbon.

I've yet to find a petco fish without ick... if he doesn't make it, you may want to refrain from putting anything in your tank for about 4-6 weeks. Also... what water parameters did you test for and what are the levels? What test kits did you use?

i think the best petco store is at union square. I got some of my fish there and there wasnt no problems. You have to get them on wed when they just get them. And if you look carefully and long enought at the fish and its behavior then you should have a problem with the fish. I dont think petco is a bad store to get fish. You just have to know about the fish before you go out and buy it.

I got a two fish from Petco @ Union Square, and one showed signs of ich within two days of my getting him (the other one was close behind). Even if the fish are in the tanks for less than 24 hours, if they are cycling water with the ich parasite (or many others for that matter), then the fish you get could be infected. I wish I had followed some good advice and quarantined them before adding them to my system - I thought they looked good and active and figured it would be fine. Luckily the only other fish I had were some chromis, so nothing was too expensive.

Rather than checking to see if your levels matched the Petco water, a better thing might be to check and see if your levels match those recommended for saltwater aquariums in all of the books and websites. Personally, my levels matching the petco water would not necessarily inspire a lot of confidence. If you look through this site, you can see the levels that some of the more advanced and successful aquarists keep their tanks at - that's what I always try to match mine to. :)
