HEY SALTWATER FANS,
I RECENTLY PURCHASED A RED STRIPE HOG FISH,NEEDLESS TO SAY IT DIDNT MAKE IT AFTER 48 HOURS,(OUCH,IT HURT THE POCKET).I ACCLIMATED THE FISH FOR A LITTLE OVER AN HOUR. I USE A SMALL AIR HOSE WITH AN AIR VALVE TO CONTROL FLOW. I PUT THE FISH AND IT'S WATER IN A 3GALLON BUCKET. I POUR SOME OF THE FISH WATER OUT THEN PUT THE AIR HOSE IN AND CONTROL THE FLOW WITH THE VALVE. BEFORE PUTTING THE FISH IN THE TANK, I ADD CYCLE TO THE TANK (DOUBLING THE DOSAGE). AFTER AN HOUR OR SO, I ADD THE FISH. I'VE LOST SEVERAL EXPENSIVE FISH AND I DON'T WANT TO LOSE ANYMORE.
DOES ANYBODY HAVE ANY INFORMATION TO HELP ME EXTEND THE LIFE OF THE FISH?? I'VE BEEN DOING RESEARCH AND HAVE FOUND ALOT OF EXPENSIVE FISH. I'M AFARID OF TAKING THAT STEP AGAIN, AND LOSE THEM.
:?
THANK YOU,
WRASSER

Wrasser,

I'm going to assume your water parms are ok. Here is what I do...

I float the bag in the the aquarium water to equalize the temp for about 10-15 minutes. I get a bucket and air line hose like you do and pour the contents of the bag into the bucket. I regulate the the water drip comming from my aquarium at about about 1 sec per drip interval for about 45minutes to an 1hour. After that I net out the fish and place into my tank and I dump the water from the bucket down the drain, I have never lost a fish using this method.

I don't use cycle. What is cycle? Is this some sort of acclimation solution.

Hi wrasser!

Please tell us more about your tank (Size, Rock, Date set-up) also what are your test readings (Ammonia, PH and so on)
I think there are alot of people here that will be able to help you with this, please let us know

Thank You

Have you lost any fish recently that were not newly added? Also what are you doing for lighting? Of course I would remind about the basics: testing sality, ph, etc from the pet store water vs tank water. I generally prefer to have my water fresh and on spec before adding anyone. Also of note - almost every fish store I have seen keeps their sality super low, like brackish low sometimes so it can take awhile to adjust.

I don't do the air-hose thing but I am a fan of the "shot glass method". One shot glass every 5-10 minutes once the water is at the same temperature works great IMO. Pour the water to create the minimum surface impact possible (down the side or something). Keep adding tank water to the new arrival's separate water supply until the test results are identical between them. Keep lighting low during acclimation and for a day or so afterward. It usually takes anywhere from 30 mins to 2 hours depending how far off the fish store water is to start with. I am not a fan of netting prefering to use my own hands provided we are not talking about a lionfish or similar. Skip any chemicals until you see a problem you need to treat. Also helps if the new arrival has a few good hiding places in his new home for the first week at least.

Hope this helps...
