It's either ich or marine velvet. Ich will attack the eye. I suggest you get a small rubber maid container, take some water from your main tank, place in a small heater and some thing to move the water around, like a power head, air pump or small filter. Place the fish in it and treat with copper. Also get a copper kit to measure the level.

Just heat your tank up to 82 and wait as long as he's still eating.. I never used a QT tank in almost 12 yrs. now..

This is extremely bad advise and nobody should follow it.

As for the fish is has something and should be treated ,especially because the eye is infected it could either lose it or cause damage to it that mayn't be reversible.

Yes this can be bad advice if you heat your tank to fast... But Ive done this numerous times in my smaller tanks..

Heating a tank has nothing to do with QT a fish. Not treat a fish, that is very bad, also is not good. You can't just increase the temperate and hope the fish is going to make it, even if the fish is eating.

Hippo tangs are known for being ich magnets along with the powder blues. It's probably ich and if you can't QT you can start dosing the food with garlic additives (it helps prevent more parasites from attaching). If you have a UV sterilizer it might b time for a new bulb or flow adjustment (and if you don't have one now is the reality check that should make you buy one). Check your water parameters and see if there are any potential stressors for the fish such as temperature, PH, Alk, nitrate, nitrite, amm, etc. It's not out of the ordinary for a hippo to get ich but if everyone else in the tank is healthy and shows no signs it is probably just the hippo being a hippo. Most of the time they will get over it if proper steps are taken, unless there is something seriously wrong with your tank. That eye is a concern though and could end up permanently blinding the fish if it gets progressively worse. Ich can cause that bulge but it could also be bacterial in which case it might b a good idea to get some medicated food to help get rid of it. It is always better to cover all your bases than follow a hunch and lose a fish or even worse, a tank.

Lola follow the advice given here. I tried that raise the temp., and I lost all the fish in the tank but two. Dog face puffer, lion, 2 yellow tangs, powder blue, kole, and a butterfly, in total 7 dead fish. A 10g started kit at petland discounts is not that expensive, especially when you consider what you have invested in your fish. In the past I had always medicated, and never lost a fish.

OMG!!!! I had the same thing happen to my Pajama Cardinal. It's eye looked the same and got worse. I qt'd hm and dosed with copper for the recomended 14 days.I tested copper levels all along and it was gone. Clean bill of health. I waited 3 weeks to be sure before throwing back into my main tank and two years later he is still with me.:)

Follow the directions on the medication you use.
Light if you want, not necessary.
Put them back in your display tank the same way as when you first bought him home. You acclimate him.
Best wishes to you & Dori..

Use all the meds, qt, tanks dosed with long live juice, and two viagra pills and it still won't make a difference if your water quality is not good... That was my first suggestion...And if your fish die from raising the temp a little, they were on their way out... Happy reefing and You should probably take advice from people who don't buy fish every 2 months... Unless they have 20 tanks..

all drains lead to the ocean....
^^^ just kidding

without a cleaner shrimp ur gonna have a hard time keeping ur hippo ich free. Setup a 10 gal qt tank with the temp around 80. Keep the qt's water quality just as ur regular tank. Dose with copper but do so carefully. When switching the hippo from tank to tank be sure to acclimate each time. Acclimate slowly and for a long period of time. When feeding in qt feed brine shrimp and mysis. Defrost the mysis and brine in a cup with some Kent's Garlic Xtreme. And you can also dose the tank with some garlic just to be safe with other fish. Hippo's are prone to ich so its most likely not ur fault. Good luck and if u need anything else just ask.

cleaner organisms (like almost all captive livestock) can alter their natural behaviors and never clean again. There are fewer fish in our systems with parasites and more available food than in the actual ocean and these organisms tend to get lazy. That isn't to say that you won't find some that do it, I'm just saying relying on livestock to rid your tank of parasites and save your other fish is leaving too much to chance when you can usually save them yourself.

Ken, please forgive me for taking over your thread for a moment.

That was my first suggestion...And if your fish die from raising the temp a little, they were on their way out... Bob, I never stated the fish died from raising the temp.! They died because of the ich not being treated aggressively enough.
By the way if your dig of "buy fish every 2 months...." was referring to me. You should get your facts straight.
The only fish I have lost since the switch of my tank back in Feb.,2007 were 2 out of the 3 I got from swf.com which were emaciated when I received them. And the ones my bluesided wrasse decided he did not want in the tank.
As to the 7 I referred to in my previous post; that happened when I decided to purchase a tang from petland, and was to lazy to set up a QT consequently gave the dreaded ich to everyone in the tank.
And to take my laziness one step further again I didn't QT, and did the raise the temp step which did absolutely nothing to rid the fish of ich. Consequently the fish succumbed to the disease.
Oh yes, no I don't have 20 tanks I have 5..

Now let me ask you this. Did I in any way attack you in my previous post? So that you felt a need to attack me. I'm saying this because I certainly felt that you singled me out in your post. I could be wrong of course, and if I am please accept my apology.

I am here in MR to reap the excellent information, and help quite a few have to offer. As well as to offer my experience of the past 6 years I've had in the SW hobby. Definitely no where near as good as others here.
Certainly not to attack anyone, or to be attacked.

Be blessed,
Awilda
