Hi all sort of a wierd request. Have a friend thats pretty well off. he has a great tank, 180g but its really high, like 4 feet or so. anyway he has asked me for some help picking out some fish as the guy he has hired isnt very good (lots o damsels !?!). right now the main fish he has are a harlequin tusk, a mimic tang, spotted hawkfish, bunch of damsels, blufaced angel, 2 anthias (1 is a lyretail), watchman gobies, 2 chocolate chip stars and a sand sifting star. Money is sort of no object. what r some of the rare beauties u guys can recommend, im talking dreamfish?

Conspiculatus ~1200-1500
Goldenback Trigger ~800
(one of a kind) Xanthic Undulated Trigger ~3000
Some of these fish are currently in your area. Let me know if you need help finding them.

Money's no object?
180 gallon tank?
What filtration does he have? How are his levels? How large are the fish in there?
maybe the old fish guy was adding damsels because thats all that would fit. I've dealt with people who say money is no object but I try to upgrade the filtration and all of a sudden money means a lot more. Buying fish is no problem but the health is a different story.

great info goin to look these up. as far as his tank there is def room it is a big tank and the fish r small. filtration, im pretty sure its a closed loop system, not sure the size onf the sump, i know there is a skimmer dont know how big. levels seems to be good all around except Phosphates r high.
sean, damsels were used to cycle the tank. and i know people hear money is no object all the time but this guy means it. he dropped over 15k on his tank without blinking.

couldnt find a pic of the undulated. th eclarion seems to be endagered so thats out, dont want to rape the earth for a fish tank. r the goldenback and consipiculatus endagered as well? r they hard to take care of?

they have trouble eating let alone the other fish.. thats why they are hard to keep but if hes paying a guy to take care of it ... why not have the guy train it to eat... it could eat small fish and shrimp but the fish you listed dont seem too small...

just giving a heads up for you
15k seems like a lot of money but most people with "high end" reefs have dropped a lot more on a 120 or larger tank. I've done set ups where the tank alone is 5-10k without the equipment. Even they are reluctant to spend more on filters then on fish.

The problem with stocking a tank like this (and a 180 is not a large tank) is that the fish don't stay small. If he wants other fish I would suggest either upgrading the tank at this point or removing some of the fish he currently has. "They are small now" is not a response. Also, like Sean said 15k is is a drop in some buckets and even if he is willing to spend the money for some rare fish why risk them with the current occupants and a possibly mediocre system?

The Clarion angel is not endangered, it is protected which is very different. That is why it collected by permit only. The Xanthic undulated is so rare that there really arent any pictures of them out there, I've only seen or heard of about 3-4. The goldenback comes from extremely deep water and the conspic comes all the way from New Caledonia, both of which make them hard to get to US dealers, hence the domestic rarity and price.

The only endangered fishes I can think of are yellow tangs and banggai cardinalfish. These fish are collected in such great numbers that they are very cheap but declining in abundance in the wild. The so-called rare fish are usually collected in very small numbers so our impact on the wild stocks is likely to be very low.

Get something that will eat the damsels :)

i wish.

manyfish, thanks for the link looking thru it and it looks great.

coralite, also great info i am emailing pics of the fish. didnt know bengai and yellows were endagered!!

lfsmarineguy, tru i didnt think of how big some of them get and it is a tall tank so not the most swimming space. i guess 15k isnt alot for a tank where u guys come from but i have a 125 i spent a grand on so compared to me he spent alot on his tank.

thanks for all ur help guys
