Hello I'm on my way to work so sorry for the shortness of this thread: Salinity 1.020, Ammo-0,trites-0, trates-10ppm,PH-8.1,Calcium-370, temp 81; 72 ga. bow front, 70lbs live sand, 80lbs live rock, set up for over 9 months and have some soft corals.

I noticed my Blue hippo and Huma Huma trigger have ich. (small white dots on body) What caused it and how can I get rid of it. I haven't added anything in over a month and the half. Nothing new as far as corals or fishes. The only thing I've changed was I added a HOB Refugium w/ Miracle Mud and LR rubble, and some Cheato.

Please advise me on this problem, dont want to lose my babies. I saw this product but am scared to use it "No Ich-Marine" from Pet Solutions Website. Please advise on its use to treat ich problem.

Thanks, NYCReefer

Hey

I sugest you take them out your tank and put them in a hospital tank and treat them with coppersafe, if thats not an option buy kent garlic and dip the food in the garlic before feeding. That may help the fish fight ich off. DO NOT PUT COPPERSAFE IN YOU MAIN TANK.

Either you've had ich all along or it came from the LR rubble Cheato you got. Most likely the ladder. I treated ich for 8 weeks and I'm very paranoid about adding anything to it. It's a PITA so you should QT anything wet especially when you're keeping hippo tangs and other ich magnets.

Sometimes it's the temp swings at night that cause them to get stressed.Hippos are known to get ich that most.Try the garlic with food method.

Zanymaster is absolutely right. Temp swing is usually the stress factor that causes fish to get ich. Of course, ich was probably there in the water to begin with, just that fishes wont get them until they become weak. Current weather has been crazy so I advise everyone to use their heaters and dont just rely on room temperature.

I like to keep a UV Sterilizer hand while doing a garlic feed. I took had ich once and treated with small 5% daily water changes along with UV Sterilizer and garlic with food. I did the water changes for about two weeks striaght.

Good luck

feed the garlic like everyone else said, and think about getting a cleaner shrip or 2. hen my hippo had an ich issue the cleaner would clean him alomst spotless over night. i was also told that low salinity helps with the ich

I guess I read somewhere that low salinity prevented ich and other deaseases.
yes that is one way to treat ich but it also stresses out the fish my advice slowly raise your salinty 1.023-1.025
make sure temp stays consitant
add garlic to thier diet I use the spectrum thera +A
or you can soak what ever you feed them in garlic extreme

I wont go nuts let nature take it's course.

I am concerned that the cleaner shrimp would become dinner for the Huma Picasso Trigger. He likes the eat my snails and hermits. I will definitely raise the salinity slowly again and begin the garlic regiment. I hope this works its way out of the tank. No ones commented on the use of Ich medication I saw for sell on Pet Solutions' website.
Thanks to everyone thats helping me during this stressful outbreak of ICH.

Ich will almost always show when fish are stressed just like humans when we are tired and worn out, drastic changes in weather get us sick.
keep water parameters up, keep fish eating they will be fine
there is no such thing as a sterile tank

from what i have read about cleaner shrip it should be ok. i have read that fish value the service of a cleaner shrimp so much that they will not eat them. some fish will even defend a cleaner. in the wild cleaners will set up cleaning stations for fish, friend or preditor, to line up and wait to get cleaned. on the flip side this isnt the wild and you might be rite.

thank you very much everyone, I'm stressed and concerned I've had these babies since the start. I could not find the Kent Garlic but got the Seachem Brand Garlic Guard. I will do a partial water change and begin the garlic regiment. Slowly raising the salinity too.

you read about hypo salinity. However you need to lower even further for this to work. It 1017 or 1016. However, this method takes some time.

Well, actually the salinity has to be even lower than that to 1.010. That's why you should do that in a hospital tank b/c your other inhabitants in the main tank may not survive in such low salinity. I went down as low as 1.008 for my PBT in a separate tub before. You should also use a refractometer to check the salinity accurately.

I bought a cleaner wrassel and after acclimating it by drip method for two hours he was added to the display tank. I got my fingers crossed and hope he goes to work cleaning the hippo and trigger. I was advised by the LFS to do a fresh water dip on the fish, its supposed to kill the ich.

Neither the Fresh water dip or cleaner wrasse are going to get rid of the ich. The ich parasite is inside the fish and the wrasse can't get at them. The white spots that you're see on the fish is the final stage before the ich falls off and starts over again.

It's best to remove the fish and start to treat them either with Hyposality or copper. You should also leave the tank fishless for about 6 - 8 weeks. At that point you should get rid of the ich. In the future you want to QT all of your fish and you also need to be careful what corals, LR or algae you add to your tank, because as what was posted above someone may have ich in their tank and you can introduce it by adding things from that person tank.
