cleaners can help with preventative maintenance but probably wont do much with an actual ich outbreak. Is the clown acting normal? If so I would just leave him and watch him. If you have ich, its either treat all tank inhabitants in a QT tank for 6-8 weeks (DT needs that long to cycle through the ich's lifecycles) or just let them be and see if they can beat it themselves. I did the latter and have had no problems since. Besides, if they are stressing, the move and treatment might stress them more causing death.

Heres an old thread about ich

Good thing Bobby because cleaner shrimp and fish will do absolutely nothing for ick.
As you found out, it disappears on it's own (sometimes) and that is how these rumors start about cleaner shrimp curing ich. Not going to happen.
The ich fell off your fish because they are going through their cycle and are still in there only now there are many many more of them.
Sometimes, for some reason they do not re infect the fish. There are all sorts of theories on this but just watch them for a while.

i am having the same problem. I have a Skunk clown that also has Ich out the blue after being in my tank for almost a month.

He keeps siding himself to my peppermint shrimp to get droomed, But the peppermint pays him no mind.

I am going to my LPS today to get a Skunk cleaner shrimp to see if it will help.

all of my fish were QT aside from a lil Damsel thati can catch and has has been in first started the tank 2 years ago. He had Ich for a bit lastyear, and beat it, and never had it again ( or no physical signs anyway)..

Could the Damsle be the root of all Ich evil in my tank?

Im with Malibu361 and laling. I had ich on my hippo and the cleaners (scarlet skunk) thought he was a swimming buffet. they picked it all off of him as i watched, and he was happy as a clam. I havent seen ich since.

Since its a clown, what about an anemone? The cleaner shrimps and wrasses do help a little with ich. Also U/V helps. They all worked for me. Also make sure your fishes are healthy and happy. Stressed fishes will get ich much more easier.

well i got my Skunk Cleaner , and my Skunk clown damn near trew himself at it within seconds of me putting the shrimp in.lol

The cleaner wasn't having it !!. Lights went out, and i woke up this morning , and the Skunk clown is externally Ich free.

and he takes regular trips to the Skunk cleaner to get groomed.

<~~ crosses fingers!

feed your tank with some garlic juice soaked fish food and the ick is gone. I beat ick a couple of times in the past with this easy to do method in my reef tank with no loss of fish or corals.

Garlic is thought to keep the fish's immune system up. But Garlic itself will not kill ick.

I think it's a good thing to do regularly, but I don't think anyone can guarantee success without removing the fish from the tank and QT...

Just a side note, I have had luck with the Garlic method.
nice... well i'll start feeding my tank garlic.. I have been feeding my Skunk cleaner shrimps raw shrimp from the supermarket. i feel bad. lol

My experience coming from fish only for many years:
Ick is not like aids but rather the common cold. If you took an overdose of meds and or ran a marathon while with a cold you would probably get pneumonia and if forced to run again die. I say running a marathon because when you place a fish in a hypo-salinity tank they gasp every seconds. Also placing them in the hypo tank does nothing unless its done quickly like within a few short minute (again my experience) the reason for this is what really kills the ick is the sudden change in osmotic pressure. They laterally explode. So if you take the time to slowly add your fish to the hypo tank the pressure in the ick (at a certain stage) can equalize defeating the purpose. It true the hypo tank won?t be favorable to the ick 4 stage cycle.
So my experience is to just leave the fish alone and maybe add that aloe stuff that helps their slime coat. When it comes to ick a good slime cold is like a good immune system. Notice you don't see fish without scale get ick often if at all that?s because their slime coat wont allow it.
Best bet is to get rid of what ever is stressing out the fish and maybe adding a new piece of live rock so he has his own place to hide.
And if you really want to keep down the ick numbers use a UV sterilizer. I turn mine on for about 6 weeks after adding a new fish.

Hope he lives!
