Fresh water cichlids /skimmer

My father started a african cichilid tank at his office. I'm a saltwater guy and know nothing about freshwater tanks. He's older and I went to visit him today and he was struggling doing a water change. I told him he should get a protein skimmer. I assume you could use one on a freshwater tank correct? That being said if he can whats a good HOB skimmer? His tank is 45g. TIA!

Nope. Only works in saltwater. Not sure the reason though.

Just did some google searching looks like I'm going to get him a surface skimmer.
