I find them very useful in my Amazon 33gal tank, because they make the water very acid - although possibly too acid; the pH is below 6.0 (the lowest reading my kit can do).
I do not clean them - they develop a brown sludge underneath, which my plants grow their roots down into. Once a plant is in the plate, I leave it there until it dies. I have very good growing rates with this.

There is also an older Fulval canister for filtering. Four angels, two discus, and a dozen cardinals like it very much.

BTW, you can grow your own tubifex in the cesspool under the UGF plate. Back to your tubifex topic, they are not necessarily coming from foulest water, however, they require very nutritional water to survive. Frankly, typical underplate of UGF is ideal location for them.

thanx for the heads up.
It would probably also be pretty ideal for Kuhli Loaches to lay their eggs - assuming it wasn't too acid.

It's interesting that one of the wholesaler used to tell me that they find khuli loach egg/fry from time to time in shipping bags or holding tanks.

It seems that it sholdn't be too hard to duplicate the environment and coax the loaches to breed in our tanks. But I've never suceeded in getting khuli to breed.
