I havent ran a freshwater tank for over 18years. I just got my daughter a 2.5 gallon tank for her room and have 5 Rumy-nosed tetras in it. I was wondering what one medium sized fish I could put in there with the fewest problems. Thanks for all replies!

I would not have put rummy nose tets in a new tank as they are rather delicate, ime.

I had a nice 2.5 with a male Beta that did very well.

I'd replace the rummy noses with white clouds or go with a male betta, probably just the betta.

bettas will kill and attack certain tet species-most notably neons

a 2.5 is really too small for a 'medium' size fish as hinted at above ;)

By probably just the betta, I meant pulling the tetras out and stocking the tank with only a betta.
