Locally, you're better off collecting in September. The Gulf Stream is warmer and has swept Caribbean fish north with it. We used to collect by Barnegut Lighthouse in NJ. If you use a seining net, you can get butterflies, pipefish, boxfish and seahorses. Many years back someone caught a large French Angel from a fishing boat off Sheapshead Bay. He took it to a LFM for an ID, but was told he'd have gotten $75 for it if had brought it in alive...

Michael- There aren't many tropicals that show up on the north shore where you are, although I have caught lizardfish while fishing at McCabes beach in September. The local stuff we get in our area won't last long in a reef tank, with the exception of mud snails (Ilyanassa obsoleta) that last for years. I used to keep a 10 gal local tank, with hermits, mud crabs, mussels and even oysters. The tank was too small for fish....I once kept a puffer for a year or more, but it meant constant water changes. If I ever retire out there, I intend to set up a big local tank with killies, sheepshead minnows, and silversides.
